2016: My Year of Travel

I have been asked the question, “Are you ever around?” far fewer times this year than last. This is either down to the fact that 1) My friends are used to me being away now, or 2) Last year’s calculation that I’m actually in Dublin for 64% of the year did the trick. Anyway, out of curiosity (and what feels like may become tradition), I have sussed out my travel stats for 2016…

This year I travelled an estimated total of 62,659km – that’s roughly equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 1.5 times. This only takes into account plane journeys. Maybe one year I’ll get better at this and factor in train/bus journeys too. Eh.

I was away from home a total of 135 days, which is about 37% of the time. Interestingly, this is only 3 days more than in 2015 but my overall flight distance is 40% less than last year’s. 2016 was year of the short-haul, apparently.

Other fun facts:
– My 3 most frequented airports of the year were Dublin (24 times, or once a fortnight), Gatwick (10 times) and Berlin Tegel (7 times)
– Berlin was my second home in 2016 – I spent 39% of my time away there
– I slept in 25 different beds while travelling and only woke up discombobulated (read: woke up in the middle of the night unable to figure out which direction the bedroom door was) twice. Go me!
– 50% of all my trips were planned around gigs/festivals \m/
– The trip that racked up the most air distance (14,694km) was my US East Coast one, during which I spent time in 13 airports, or an average of one airport every 1.4 days!
– The trip that hit the most countries in one go was in April: Ireland > Romania > Germany > UK > Germany > Ireland
– I trapped and killed (read: let it die while eyeing it suspiciously over the course of a few days) 1 evil wasp while away

From singing karaoke with friends in a dive bar in Boston to…
freaking the fuck out while The Dresden Dolls covered RATM’s ‘Killing In The Name’ accompanied by a full-on brass band, also in Boston, to…
pulling a muscle in my neck at a Rob Zombie gig in Syracuse NY to…
riding a rollercoaster on top of a casino in Las Vegas to…
attending my first ever overseas metal festival in Paris to…
watching my bestie follow her dreams and perform in an immersive theatre piece in London to…
being a total goth and spending my birthday at Bran Castle in Transylvania…
…2016 was brilliant.

And given that I already have plans to travel to Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Istanbul, Cardiff, Malta, Berlin, Prague, and Krakow in 2017 (my 30th year!) I think next year is shaping up pretty nicely too.
