The Big Backpacking Trip

Between September 2012 and March 2013 I backpacked through Africa, India and South East Asia.

Africa

From September until December, I travelled overland from Nairobi to Cape Town. This part of my trip was planned out through a company and I was on the truck with a group of  around 20 people. I figured it would be a good way to ease into the backpacking experience. Here’s the route we followed:

I received a few raised eyebrows at my choice of destination, which is perfectly understandable given that Africa can be a challenge for even the most seasoned of travellers. This post may explain why I picked Africa as the starting point to my first solo backpacking trip. Some of the highlights of the trip:

India

December till mid-February found me wandering around India.

India

My backpacking adventure in India began in Mumbai. From there I travelled down along the coast and spent some time in Goa, during which I took a side-step to Hampi for a few days. Afterwards I travelled down to Kerala where I spent Christmas and New Year. January saw me spend three weeks in the temple towns of Tamil Nadu, gradually making my way up to Pondicherry and stopping in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) for the annual dance festival. For the last leg of my trip, I boarded a train for 30 hours and made my way up north to visit a few key spots in Rajasthan.
