That Time I Flew Across a Gorge – Flying Fox in Vic Falls, Zimbabwe

Remember the story that did the rounds last year, of the Australian girl who bungee jumped at Vic Falls, Zimbabwe, only to have the rope snap? You can watch it happen right here.

It actually put me off bungee jumping before I went away on my trip. I couldn’t pass up on all the adrenalin activities though and instead chose to do the ‘baby’ activity of the lot – the flying fox.

What is a flying fox, you ask? Imagine a harness attached to a cable stretched across the width of a gorge. When strapped in to said harness, you are effectively dangled from your back and, after running off a plank, can fly across the gorge in true Super(wo)man fashion. Like so:

Turn on your speakers for extra entertainment value!

As someone who is afraid of heights – or just dying in general – I was incredibly nervous about the whole thing. Rollercoasters were the scariest adrenalin activities I had experienced before the flying fox. Mind you, Alton Towers’ Oblivion is no laughing matter.

Facing possible-death with a smile 🙂

Once I was strapped in and the guy started the countdown, there was no going back. The feeling I got as I emptied my lungs and ran off the side of a gorge was, pardon my French, A-FUCKING-MAZING. Yes, I was strapped in but it felt a bit like the lottery – you just never know.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargghhhh….

When I slowed down to a halt and had an incredible view of the Zambezi river beneath me,  I forgot to be afraid. I was elated to be alive! I even flapped my arms a little like a bird, just to see what it felt like. (answer: pretty cool)

The flying fox in Zimbabwe was only the start to all the adrenalin activities I experienced in Africa. Swimming in a pool at the edge of a waterfall, cage diving with sharks, sky diving and quad biking were yet to come. Not bad for a self-proclaimed scaredy-cat.

May I come back now, please?

Hahahaha, I love that video! It’s the blood-curdling scream that you let loose before your feet have even left the ground. Cracks me up every time!

And yes, Oblivion is definitely no laughing matter!!
