“A man who pays his bills on time is soon forgotten.”
The crickets are chirping and the tumbleweed a-rolling in my little blog. As you can imagine, my kick-off date for my grand plans being more than a year in the future, there are going to be times when nothing much is really happening.
I have made a tiny bit of progress though in setting up an account with a Credit Union to start saving. I plan to travel for as long as possible and to do so I’m going to need money. I suppose I could scrimp and save for four years and eventually have the funds to do what I want to do or else I could do what I intend on doing and take out a loan.
Getting into debt is not something I ever wanted to do. I am proud to say that at (almost) 24 years of age, I have never once taken out a loan and I am not in debt in any way, shape or form. Well, except for the €30 I owe my parents 😉 When I bought my first laptop, I did so after teaching dance classes on the side and saving the money. When I moved country, I used my savings once again. I like to think that I am pretty responsible when it comes to money. Don’t get me wrong; I like spending and I find it hard to save but I do make the effort to save something every month and I understand that sometimes you have to say ‘no’ in order to be able to say ‘yes’ to something a little further down the line.
Working for a short term loans company has increased my awareness of the problems debt can get you into and how it can all spiral out of control. I do like to think I am more careful than that, however. At the same time I feel like it’s about time I stopped being Little Miss Responsible and, well, to hell with it! Yes, I am going rack up some debt but I’m also going to get out there and make some memories for myself. I can’t justify maxing out a credit card on clothes and gadgets, but I can certainly justify doing the same on travelling.
Of course, there is still the worry that I won’t be granted the loan I am going to be asking for. Should that actually happen, it will be disappointing but I will still have enough money saved up to go ahead with the first leg of my trip. I won’t go into the details of what I am planning just yet but that’s all to come 🙂
