The World Is a Big Place

Yeah, we all know the world is a big place. But when was the last time you took a good long look at a world map? Perhaps I am reaching out to the wrong audience here and you all have a wonderful knowledge of geography. However, to those of you who, like me, have never really looked at maps beyond the rough area of where you live, a world map is a bit of a shock to the system.

I knew Great Britain and Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and all those other lovely countries which form the Mediterranean basin. I also knew that beyond those countries were places like America, India, Russia, Australia. I also had a rough idea where you could pinpoint them on a map. However, when the world map I had ordered as my first step to planning The Big Trip arrived, and I pinned it up on the wall, stepped back and took a long hard look, I suddenly realised just how little I knew about the world. Is Japan really that far away? Is Africa really that big? Don’t even get me started on Russia.

This is good. I like to feel humbled. Traveling broadens the mind and so does looking at a map, apparently! Now I realise that no matter how many countries I visit, it will just be the tip of the iceberg. This excites me. There is so much to learn and so much to see. I just wish I could start now!

Russia is how big?

I've been meaning to get myself a world map for years, believe it or not – although it's more so that when I hear about something going on in the world I'll be able to place it lol. These days it's looking more and more like 'where are my friends at right now?'. I loved geography as a kid, I wish I'd continued it *sigh*
